Popular songs often make us recall memories of the past.
"高山青" is one of them. The song was so popular in the
1950s that my mother, who did not speak mandarin, could
even "哼上幾句".

Although the lyrics in this song conveyed the beauty
of the mountains and their people:

"高山青" "澗水藍" "姑娘美如水" "少年壯如山",

"高山族", or now more correctly referred to as Taiwanese aborigines
(原住民), was a mystery to me during my childhood over half a
century ago. I thought they lived in the high mountains, remote and
perhaps harsh places, where most of the "平地人" had hardly visited,
or it was even a place beyond reach.

Nevertheless, every time I listened to this joyful song, I seemed to
see those 姑娘 and 少年 together hand in hand, cheerfully singing and
dancing, and also hear my mother's "哼上幾句" singing.
