"TWO DOWN UNDER"

幾天前, 我一位建中老同學 LGL, 在他的 e-mail 裏提到, " The Aussies (澳洲人) celebrate Christmas in summer."

原來, LGL 曾在澳洲首都坎倍拉, 澳洲國立大學敎書, 五十五歲退休後, 再到台灣中央研究院工作。


這也讓我想起一張書箋, 也是一張一九五九年的節日賀卡。

它一直藏在我的一本書, 書名 "TWO DOWN UNDER"。

這是一本三十五年前, 我在我們小城的圖書館 "Book Sale" 的時候購得。

"TWO DOWN UNDER" 是作者 Helen Kingsley McNamara 的旅遊記事。

她與先生, 在一九五八年十月, 到隔年一月, 從美國芝加哥飛到舊金山, 再乘遊輪橫跨太平洋, 來到澳洲, 紐西蘭, 做了一次長途旅遊。 

在旅途中, 陸上, 海上, 空中, 將所見所聞, 記錄下來。她分十個段落 (Letter #1 through #10), 寄給家鄉親友, "circle of friends"。

In her letter #7, when they were at Fox Glacier, South Island, New Zealand, December 26, 1958, she wrote:

" Never a Christmas morning,
  Never the old years ends,
  But somebody thinks of some one,
  Old days, old times, old friends!

This familiar verse appeared on the printed dinner menu last night here at Fox Glacier Hotel, ........... .

Our observation is that Christmas in New Zealand is not the festive occasion that it is at home; not a time of 'togetherness,' but rather a time of 'awayness,' more like the Fourth of July, Bob sagely observes, for it is summertime, and every one can get away on holiday at that time does so. ........... ."


那原是私人的郵件, 在一九五九年, 她先生特別將這些書信, 凑合成書, 書名就叫 "TWO DOWN UNDER", 也就是說, McNamara 倆旅歷赤道下端的兩塊陸地 (澳洲, 紐西蘭)。

在書的序文中, 她先生非常感謝, 稱讚她。先生 Bob McNamara 這麼說:

" Her undersigned companion, ever a devoted admirer, admittedly shared in the experience, but his sense of observation fell far short of Helen's ability to note and to describe the day-to-day, week-to-week happenings. Even such a comment, be assured, fails to take into account, acknowledge the obligation, or give adequate applause for the hours she laboered at the typewriter while her husband resorted to daydreaming or other less worthy pastimes."

On This Christmas Day Morning

On this Christmas Day morning, our granddaughter, Penny, knocked on our door and handed her hand drawn greeting card to us.

She said that she got up very early this morning and started to draw a greeting card for her grandma and grandpa, who had visited her home for the Christmas holiday.

Being asked the reason why she chose the number 100, she simply replied that she did not really know. 

Obviously, for her, "100" is a great and grand number.

The Real Quiet

美國大自然作家, Sigurd F. Olson, 在他的一篇散文 "Silence" 𥚃,  寫著:

"An owl hooted somberly in the timber of the dark shores, a sound
that accentuated the quiet on the open lake. Here again was the
silence, and I thought how rare it is to know it, how increasingly
difficult to ever achieve real quiet and the peace that comes with it."

讓人聯想到 南北朝 王籍 的文外獨絕, 千古名句:

" 蟬噪林逾靜 , 鳥鳴山更幽。"

他們寫境, 以動顯靜, 更加突顯湖泊山林的幽靜。

"迷"人的北京

"迷"人的北京



在他的西潮, "迷人的北京", 蔣夢麟說過,

"這是我的城巿，我願意永遠住在這裏。"

他在北京住了十五年，直到民國廿六年（一九三七年)，抗戰開始，才離開北京。

他說, "

"回想過去的日子，甚至連北京飛揚的塵土都富於愉快的聯想。我懷念北京的塵土，希望有一天能再看看這些塵土。清晨旭日初昇，陽光照在紙窗上，窗外爬藤的陰影則在紙窗上隨風擺動。紅木書桌上，已在一夜之間舖上一層薄薄的輕沙。拿起雞毛帚，輕輕地拂去桌上的塵土，你會感到一種難以形容的樂趣。然後你再拂去筆筒和硯臺上的灰塵；筆筒，刻著山水風景，你可以順便欣賞一番，硯臺或許是幾百年來許多文人學士用過的，他們也像你一樣曾經小心翼翼地拂拭過它。"

他覺得有那 "古色古香的氣氛"。

遙望紫禁城的皇宮建築, 他說:

"碰到晴空澄碧，豔陽高照的日子，宮殿屋頂的黃色釉瓦就閃耀生輝。在暮靄四合或曙色初露之時，紫禁城的大門──午門──上的譙樓映著蒼茫的天色，很像半空中的碉堡。在萬里無雲的月夜，這些譙樓更像是月亮中的神仙宮闕，可望而不可即。"

這是蔣夢麟眼中 "迷人的北京"。


最近，"北京城在重度阴霾笼罩之下，更达到6级严重污染级别，北京当局实施交通管制车辆限行，下令工厂关闭、学校停课、建筑工地停工。"

到底,  北京空氣中的,  不止是蔣夢麟所說的麈與土。

一個月前，在我的生日那天，三弟從台北寄來一鍋豬腳麵線。



昨天冬至，他再寄來一碗湯圓。



這年頭，年華已老，對我來說，這種祝賀方式，既健康，且實惠。

三弟深知, 他大哥年輕時，每逢生日或佳節，最盼望能享受的是什麼。

如今，大家可在網路搜尋，選擇受領者可能最鐘愛的，寄上電子卡，電子蛋糕，電子豬腳麵線，.... 貼心，上乘的精神食糧。

尤其對那些老年族群，盡享眼福，沒有多餘的三高疑慮。


年華漸老，修身養性，節能減碳，有眼福，心福，也不必都要有口福。

不過，當孝順的兒女們，一年一次，安排了這個:



就可盡情的享受了。

冬至

這幾天，北加州氣候偏冷，晚間氣溫下降到冰點以下。



今天，三弟從台北電郵給我一碗湯圓。

他說，

"今天是冬至，送上一碗湯圓，祝大哥闔家圓圓滿滿，快樂年年。" （按，台灣今天是十二月二十一日）

原來，家中無陰曆，寒近不知節。

說起冬至，葉子一直在想，冬"至" 是冬之到來，還是冬之至極?

到底, 它不該是冬天的第一天，而應該是冬天的中間點。

因為，這天白晝最短，夜間最長。

而從此以後，晝漸長，夜漸短；𣎴再夜長夢多, 也不晝短苦夜長，不必秉燭遊。


在這寒冬裡，大家得注意保暖，最忌爆食凶酒； 但也不必如古書所言：

"冬至前後，加子安身靜體，百官絕事，不聽政，擇吉辰而後省事。"          ~ 後漢書 禮儀志 ~


古代詩人也注意到這個時節的不一樣：

一年冬至夜偏長

General Sherman

General Sherman Tree, a giant sequoia in California's Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, is the largest living thing on earth, measured by volume.

It is also among the oldest, estimated to be around 2200 years old.

It soars 275 feet  into the blue Sierra sky and is still "growing like a teenager".

It is over 36 feet in diameter at the base.

In 1879, this tree was named after American Civil War general, William Tecumseh Sherman, by naturalist James Wolverton.
