Should old times past be forgotten? (Rerun 2014)

'Auld Lang Syne' - Happy New Year

'Auld Lang Syne' (YouTube video)

The Anglicized version of 'auld lang syne' means old long-since,
old long-ago, old long past, or times gone by.

The best-known use of the phrase is Robert Burns' poem "Auld lang
syne", the words of which are sung in English-speaking countries
around the world each New Year's Eve, to a tune that Burns said he
transcribed from an old man's singing of it. (The Phrase Finder)

The theme of 'auld lang syne' is the past. It is a nostalgic, bittersweet,
loving song, which calls upon us not to forget the old times past, but
to cherish them as wonderful and sweet memories.

Happy New Year!

Robert Burns' poem "Auld Lang Syne" (1788):

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne?

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp,
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pu'd the gowans fine;
But we've wandered mony a weary fit
Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

We twa hae paidled i' the burn,
Frae morning sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roared
Sin' auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere,
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught
For auld lang syne.

For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Should old times past be forgotten?

靜中見真境, 淡中識本然.

YouTube Meditation Video

冷靜觀世事, 忙中去偷閒.
靜中見真境, 淡中識本然.

- 菜根譚 -

YTL, or best known as "Best Tom", is a classmate of mine from 建中 High School. He had recently spent several days with his spouse at a Buddhist Temple.  They came home in a peaceful state of mind.

It is the time to settle down our mind, refocus and start planning for
the New Year.

The book “Quiet Mind” is more than a meditation book. The author
offers readers guidance on using the moments between activities,
which he calls "still points", as opportunities to focus on becoming
more fully awake to who they are.

“Quiet Mind” is an invitation to rest, refresh, find peace, awaken,
remember, and reveal.

Pork Belly Sandwich

pork belly sandwich

Last month, while we were in Taipei, we enjoyed the best "東坡肉" at 仁愛路 "上海鄉村".

Yesterday, I had "Pork Belly Sandwich" ordered by our daughters at "The Girl &The Fig" Restaurant when we were in Sonoma, our neighboring town. They knew well that I loved to try it.

While both "東坡肉" and " Pork Belly" would simply "melt" in your mouth, the "Pork Belly" is crisp on the outside.

Accordingly, "pork belly" meat (豬腩), a boneless cut of fatty meat from the belly of a pig, is called "五花肉" in Taiwan, or "三層肉" in 閩南語.

From a health point of view, this can't be good for your health. We may only just enjoy it once in a great while.

From "Sonoma Square" to "Cornerstone Sonoma"

It was another beautiful day for family fun after Christmas.

A tour from “Sonoma Square”, a gorgeous historic landmark and "slow" culture capitol, to "Cornerstone Sonoma", a gallery-style garden.

Morning On The Valley Hill

Morning On The Valley Hill

Christmas time is family gathering time.

It is also a time for memories, memories of the past and making memories for the future.

On this lovely sunny morning, the day before Christmas, we went on a hike in Westwood Hills, a neighborhood park in the Valley.

Westwood Hills Park is a heavily wooded park. The park provides three miles of trails through beautiful groves of eucalyptus and oak trees, grassy meadows, and affords expansive views of the valley.

The Gnarled Old Oak

When our children were attending the school here over a decade ago, they mentioned to us about "Stanford Dish" and its surrounding hiking trails, the "Stanford Dish loop". They often suggested that we should go there and take a stroll when we came to the campus to see them.

We however did not find a chance to do so.

The other day, we did so and did it with our children and grandchildren.

The "Dish loop" is a popular route for Stanford University students, faculty members and the "Palo Altans". Its steep paved trail is suitable for running, walking, and hiking.

While we were enjoying a nice sunny morning, strolling through the path, I particularly found those gnarled old oak trees along the trails to be quite unique and inspirational, especially at this time of year.

Balconies Cliffs

Pinnacles National Park, California (YouTube video)

It is that time of year again. December has come and with it all the joys
of Christmas.

Our children and grandchildren came home from the East Coast for the
annual holiday family gathering.

Yesterday morning, while in Palo Alto, we decided to take a trip together
to Pinnacles National Park, where we have long planned to visit.

Pinnacles National Park, used to be "Pinnacles Monument" since 1908,
became the newest (the 59th) national park in January 2013.

It lies 40 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and 80 miles south of the
San Francisco Bay Area. It is a beautiful place with its unique geological
setting.

The stunning rock formations, called pinnacles and from which the park
gets its name, are the remnants of half an ancient volcano, worn down
by erosion over the eons.

"This ancient and awe-inspiring volcanic field with its massive monoliths,
spires, cave passages and canyons is a place that restores our souls
and energizes our bodies with its beauty and abundant opportunities for
outdoor recreation," -- Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar --

It was a cold but sunny day. We took the Balconies Cliffs/Cave loop trail
to get a combination of the panoramic views and the caves.

It was just another awesome day.
