“東南亞 “ and “新南陽 “, the “Second Run" Theaters

The Sound of Music

During our college years in Taipei back in the 60s, we, the students,
were often able to enjoy watching the classic, top rated movies,
including the Oscar winning films, at a very affordable student ticket
price. We just needed to wait a few weeks or months for the first run
(首輪) movie to come to a “second run” theater (二輪戲院) , or the
discount movie house. “東南亞戲院 “ and “新南陽劇場 “ were one of
those theaters.

“東南亞戲院 “, the “Second Run" Theater

“東南亞戲院 “ was across the street not too far from the NTU Square,
and “新南陽劇場“ was just a few blocks away from our NTUMC
campus. Sometimes they even ran two films alternately for one fee.
Occasionally, they did not “清場“ and let you come in at any time
during the movies. It was quite "economic" for a poor student to
watch a movie together with his "女朋友 ". It was also not unusual
for one to see his or her classmates or friends over there as well.
I miss those good old days and unique experiences.

Those theaters also often reran the old classic movies, such as:
"Gone With The Wind (飄)", "Casablanca (北非諜影)",
"The Bridge On The River Kwai (桂河大橋)", "Waterloo Bridge
(魂斷藍橋)"......... .

Auld Lang Syne

Miss Vivien Leigh, also known as 費文麗 by the audience in Taiwan,
was simply great in her role. Of all her films, Leigh stated this one
was her favorite.

(Auld Lang Syne literally translates to "Old Long Since," and more
roughly it means "long, long ago" or "days gone by.")
