Around Mother's Day last year, I received through e-mail a touching
story entitled "母親用心良苦----車票". The story had stayed with me
for a long time. It again came to my mind recently when I happened
to come across this poem "賣子歎" written by 馬柳泉 in the Ming
Dynasty. Both stories were about maternal instinct, love and sacrifice.
First, the poem of the Ming Dynasty period:
Now the e-mail touching story:
Such an inspirational and heart touching story!

Uncertainty and Turning Point

Uncertainty and Turning Point
Through the passage of time in our life, there are always moments
of uncertainty and turning points. They are crossroads, or decisive
moments. They lead to either positive or negative changes.Turning
point is a psychological term, and has literary meaning as well.
The ancient poets had wriiten poems describing the moments of
uncertainty in people's lifes, but they were mostly optimistic. The
uncertainty situation often turned into positive, desirable outcome:
or

Accidental Discovery and Nobel Prize
Accidental Discovery and Nobel Prize
While our NTUMC68 classmates are offering their opinions on a
topic posted in our class website: "A Life Saved Twice", which is
a story about two families, the Fleming and Churchill, I recall I
have also posted an article "80 years ago, Moldy and Goody" last
year in regard to the discovery of Penicillin by Alexander Fleming :
MOLDY BUT GOODY
In the new issue of Smithonian, there is another short note, "Moldy
but Goody" in the section of "This Month In History":
"Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming returns to St. Mary
Hospital in London from a holiday on September 3, 1928, to find
mold growing on one of his staphylococcus cultures. Noting that no
staphylococci are growing near the mold, Fleming investigates. He
names the "mould juice" penicillin, for the penicillium mold that
produces it. Fleming publishes his discovery in 1929, but it will be
a decade before Oxford scientists Howard Florey and Ernst Boris
Chain isolate and purify it for use as an antibiotic. Fleming dies in
1955 at age 73."
A great scientist made the discovery and had saved myriad people's
lives ! He shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine in 1945
with Howard Walter Florey and Ernst Boris Chain.
The story is rather similar to the "discovery" of "Australian Antigen"
by Baruch Blumberg.
Blumberg was a genetic scientist. In the early 1960s he was
examining blood samples from widely diverse populations in an
attempt to determine why the members of different ethnic and
national groups vary widely in their responses and susceptibility to
disease. In 1963 he discovered in the blood serum of an Australian
aborigine an antigen that he later (1967) determined to be part of a
virus that causes hepatitis B, which was not what he was originally
looking for.
He was the recipient of the 1976 Nobel Prize in Medicine for
"discoveries concerning new mechanisms for the origin and
dissemination of infectious diseases", despite the fact that he
was not even a virologist or an infectious disease specialist.
Another thought.
The Fleming story could also be compared to the "Discovery of
America" by Christopher Columbus.
In order to find a short path to the orient, Columbus, in 1492, set
sail across the Atlantic Ocean in search of the East Indies. He
"accidentally discovered" the New World, America.
No Nobel Prize then though.

“Caught In The Act” Poems
“Caught In The Act” Poems

( tw.yahoo.com)
We have seen scenes caught in the act in videos or photos, and felt
the real meaning of “spontaneous” or “natural”.
The ancient poets had also often captured scenes in the act, and
they wrote poems to describe or “picture” the moments.
However, we can only “see” those “caught in act” scenes described
in their poems through our imagination.
Of course, we start the ones written by 白居易:
Then the others:
Even in this “humanized” poem "新晴" by 宋 劉攽 ,
(South Wind), was "caught in the act":
青苔滿地初晴後, 綠樹無人晝夢餘 ;

Poems Similarities
Poems Similarities
Although two poems were written by two poets in different time
periods, we occasionally noticed the similarity between them, either
the hidden feeling, or the message they tried to convey.
Here are the examples:
or
山中何所有?嶺上多白雲;

Are you looking for a nice place to retire?
Read this poem:

The ancient poet, 白居易, or 白樂天, was not only “樂天”, but also
found himself being “居易”. He had found a place where he could be
What a great place for him to retire!
Can you find a place better than this?
For me, a 2,000 sq. ft. 宅 or 堂; half an acre of 園 or 庭; a few pots
of 竹; shelves of 書; and bottles of nice 酒 would just give me plenty
of satisfaction. As a matter of fact, I don’t need 池, 橋, 船, or 絃

Father’s Day or " 爸爸節 "
Father’s Day or " 爸爸節 "
As a father, I don't intend to emphasize this day, the Father’s Day.
As a matter of fact, I am just like many of the fathers around the
world who happen to be working today.
Father's Day is a day honoring fathers, celebrated on the third Sunday
of June in 52 of the world's countries and on other days elsewhere.
It complements Mother's Day, the celebration honoring mothers.
Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a
"father's day" in 1909. Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her
father, William Smart. William Smart, a Civil War veteran, was
widowed when his wife (Mrs. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with
their sixth child. Mr. Smart was left to raise the newborn and his
other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington
State. It was after Mrs. Dodd became an adult that she realized the
strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children
as a single parent. She approached her own minister and others in
Spokane about having a church service dedicated to fathers on June
5, her father's birthday. That date was too soon for her minister to
prepare the service, so he spoke a few weeks later on June 19th.
From then on, the state of Washington celebrated the third Sunday
in June as Father's Day.
In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national
Father's Day. Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a
presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as
Father's Day.
However, the Father’s Day or 爸爸節 in Taiwan is on August 8, which
seems to be due to the fact that 8 8 and 爸爸 sound the same. But the
origin of “父親節” in Taiwan was said to be something like this:
I prefer the third Sunday of June as the Father’s Day or 父親節,

Happy Father's Day to all the wonderful fathers around the world.

How did the ancient poets feel or think about the “heaven and earth”
or “time and life” ?
阮籍 was a sky observer.
杜甫 watched them through the Great Lake and River.
孟浩然 thought them from a historical point of view.
And, obviously, 李白 didn’t care about them, as long as he
had access to his favorite “美酒”:

Sympathy Poems
Sympathy Poems
While ancient poets often wrote poems on nature and beauty,
there were also sympathy poems or 詩歌 depicting life hardship,
bitterness, human pain and suffering:
春種一粒粟, 秋收萬顆子;

River Merchant’s Wife
River Merchant’s Wife

李白’s 長干行, one of the most delicate Chinese classical poems,
had been translated into English by many poets.
“ River Merchant’s Wife” is one of the English Version translated
by Ezra Pound, an American poet:
River Merchant’s Wife
While my hair was still cut straight across my forehead
I played about the front gate, pulling flowers.
You came by on bamboo stilts, playing horse,
You walked about my seat, playing with blue plums.
And we went on living in the village of Chokan:
Two small people, without dislike or suspicion.
At fourteen I married My Lord you.
I never laughed, being bashful.
Lowering my head, I looked at the wall.
Called to, a thousand times, I never looked back.
At fifteen I stopped scowling,
I desired my dust to be mingled with yours
Forever and forever and forever.
Why should I climb the lookout?
At sixteen you departed,
You went into far Ku-to-en, by the river of swirling eddies,
And you have been gone five months.
The monkeys make sorrowful noise overhead.
You dragged your feet when you went out.
By the gate now, the moss is grown, the different mosses,
Too deep to clear them away!
The leaves fall early this autumn, in wind.
The paired butterflies are already yellow with August
Over the grass in the West garden;
They hurt me. I grow older.
If you are coming down through the narrows of the river Kiang,
Please let me know beforehand,
And I will come out to meet you
As far as Cho-fo-Sa.
-- Ezra Pound --
There were other classical poems of “ Merchant’s Wife ” or
"商人婦":
( * 劉采春 was a woman poet of the Tang dynasty period)
They all described the repressed emotion and unspoken feelings
of the 商人婦, when they were thinking of their traveling merchant
husbands, the feelings of worries, loneliness, isolation, insecurity,
expectation, disappointment, frustration, and even regret or remorse.

唐寅, the Chinese Hugh Hefner.
唐寅, the Chinese Hugh Hefner.

唐寅, better known by his “courtesy” name, 唐伯虎 “, was the
Chinese Hugh Hefner. Both of them are 桃花痴. They pursued a life
pleasure and admired feminine beauty. Hefner created the
“ Playboy Mansion”, 唐寅 built his 桃花庵 . Hefner has been
surrounded by those cute “ Rabbit girls”, or his “girl friends”,
唐寅 mingled with all his 俏婢女, including 秋香 . While Hefner
promoted mature “adult” products, 唐寅 earned his living by selling
his unique art works, mainly 丹青 or paintings including the 春宮畫,
besides his famous 山水畫 and 人物畫.
I wander if 唐寅 also wore pajama most of the time in his 桃花庵
just as Hefner often did inside the "Playboy Mansion".

Simplified Chinese Makes 李白 Cry
Simplified Chinese Makes 李白 Cry
李白 wrote this poem more than a thousand years ago:
but, he did not expect this:
It would make 李白 cry if he was to learn that his poems were to be
"simplified" later.
Recently, the Taiwan Ma encouraged the usage of Chinese Simplified
characters. I however have a great concern. If this is to happen, then
all the factories (工廠) in Taiwan will lose all the 設備 because "工廠"
turns into "工厂", ( which means 廠 has nothing under its roof), and
even the chimney " ' " on the roof is gone.

Poet’s Mood
Poet’s Mood
Poetry reveals poet’s mood. These two poems said the same
purpose, “借酒消愁”, but in a different mood.
In 【清明】, 杜牧 mentioned “雨紛紛” and “欲斷魂”, which is
rather depressing. 愛山, quite to the contrary, depicted an
entirely different scene, “雨霽山光潤”and “野鳥山花破愁悶”.

Self-Amusement and Self-Enjoyment
"草團標 means 茅舍, 粳 is one kind of rice, 山溜 is mountain spring,
冰敲月牙 depicts the cold spring water hitting the reflection of the
new moon."
most poets would not normally like to be the lone enjoyer of their
poetic instincts. They are bound to invite the others to share them.
陶弘景 of 南朝 dynasty had found 嶺上白雲 very amusing, and in
the 元 dynasty, 孫周卿 self-enjoyed all the stuff he had found in the
mountain.
In our life, we all should appreciate what we have, and enjoy them
as 陶弘景 and 孫周卿 did themselves.

The ancient poet and drinker, 李白, had written quite a few
famous “把酒對月” poems, such as:
花間一壺酒,獨酌無相親;
His good friend, 杜甫, in his “飲中八仙歌” poem, portrayed him as:
唐寅, of the Ming Dynasty period, very much respected 李白’s
poetic talent and drinking spirit. When he saw “萬樹桃花月滿天”
from his “姑蘇城外一茅屋”(?桃花庵), he also wrote a "把酒對月"
poem, or “把酒對月歌”, which was more like a 白話打油詩:

known as “風流才子” for his being “放浪不羈”. His poetic works often
不拘成法 , 不避口語, and were, in most cases, 信手拈來 . His another
poem “言志” had well revealed his unique personality and character.

Global Warming ?
Global Warming ?
In the year 2003, we visited Athabasca Glacier of Columbia
Icefield in the Canadian Rockies, and in 2007 we took a boat tour
on the Colorado River.
Global warming ?
These two photos tell the truth:
Glacial Retreat
The Athabasca Glacier has retreated one-third of a mile (0.5 km) in
the last 60 years and has thinned dramatically since the 1950s-60s.
“Bathtub Ring”

The white 'bathtub ring' on the rocks along the Colorado River is from
mineral deposits left by higher levels of water. A seven year drought
and increased water demand spurred by explosive population growth
in the Southwest has caused the water level to drop over 100 feet to
its lowest level since the 1960s.

“I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to
support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus,
how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
For more than a quarter of century, 陳安泰, a "小巷內的小醫師",
has set up a scholarship for the undergraduate students at National
Taiwan University. One student was selected from each college to
receive total of NT$ 800,000.00 scholarship each year.
He had once said “ 我覺得 give (施) 比 gain (receive) (受) 還快樂.”,
or in Christian words “施比受更有福”, although he is not a Christian.
(I understand he is a Buddhist)
Dr. 陳安泰 is my classmate in the NTUMC (台大醫學院) class
(1961-1968). He was an extremely shy student from Southern
Taiwan. In school, he often tried to shun away from the crowd.
He considered himself as to suffer from “社會人群恐懽症”, and he
did have some tough time during the school years. He however
had made every effort to overcome it.
After graduation, he went into training in psychiatry specialty at
NTU Hospital and later started his solo private practice in a small
alley in Taipei City. He called himself a 小巷內的小醫師, but his
patients have come from all different places in Taiwan, which
had certainly boosted his confidence and made him work even
harder. He then began to think that there was an obligation for
him to give back (回饋) to the society. He set up scholarships at
NTU. For more than a quarter of century, numerous students
have been benefited by his scholarship aids, many of them are
doing very well and some even are now college professors.
It is more blessed to give than to receive.
has continued to enjoy“施比受更有福”
I am so proud to be one of his classmates.

Ancient Poetic Wedding Wishes
Ancient Poetic Wedding Wishes
註: 夭夭 depicts 美而盛, 灼灼 indicates 美而艷, 華 is flower or 花,
之子 means “this girl”, 蕡 describes fruit 渾圓,
Generosity and Bridal hope are the traditional meaning and
symbolism of peach blossom flower. The attributes of peach
blossoms include beauty, delicacy, dainty and sweetness.
These are all feminine traits, and therefore the ancient Chinese
poet applied “Peach Blossom” to wish a young lady’s marriage.
The essence of this ancient Chinese classical poem of wedding wishes
( from 詩經 ) still applies well to an young lady’s marriage in modern
days.
The other day, this poem again reflects the feeling I had felt at my
younger daughter’s wedding.
