My NTUMC1968 classmate T.Fu. called me the other day saying he
was attending a high school class reunion in Los Angeles. T. Fu
was one year ahead of me at 建中. Our conversation brought back
建中 memories, both 酸甜 and 苦澀.

Once in a while, I dream about my junior and high school days at
The image of the school is always the famous old red brick
building, or what we called 紅樓. Therefore, my dreams about 建中
were, in a practical sense, "紅樓夢".

“紅樓夢斷知何處, 夢裡猶是建中人.”

After all, six years of studying and learning at 建中 is not a short
period of time.

I remember our school 校歌 begins with “東海東、玉山下, ........”.
Although I now consider it to be a kind of “delusion of grandeur”,
I was always proud of being a 建中人, the nickname we used to call
ourselves. Even after we graduated and started college, we still
referred to our own class as
for the following several years.

建中 is in the perfect location for a school. The National Botanical
Garden, the National Central Library, the National History and
Culture Museum, and the National Science Museum are just across
the street, and the 美國新聞處 is right next door. The Botanical
Garden was our hang-out place during the school lunch hour.
美國新聞處 , where there were a lot of English reading materials and
magazines, was the perfect place for us to improve our reading and
practice of the English language. (But as you can tell from my writing,
I obviously had not exactly benefited from that opportunity.)

During the Christmas holidays in 1995, our family took a trip
to Taiwan. While in Taipei, I proudly brought our children to
visit Dad’s old school. The 紅樓 did not impress them very
much, but they were amazed by the size of the school.

PS “紅樓夢斷知何處, 夢裡猶是建中人.” was an article in "建青"104期,
written by 劉玉春, the principal of 建中.

東海東 玉山下;
體格強,志氣大;
樂群敬業,忘己利他;
