Nature's Silence

"Beethoven Silence" by Ernesto Cortazar

Nature's Silence

鳥鳴澗 (王維)

人閒桂花落,夜靜春山空。
月出驚山鳥,時鳴春澗中。

“Silence”

Sigurd F. Olson is one of the America's most beloved nature writers.
He began his book "The Singing Wilderness" by saying:

"The singing wilderness has to do with the calling of the loons,
northern lights, and the great silence of a land lying northwest
of Lake Superior. ...."

In the chapter “Silence”, he wrote:

"It was before dawn, that period of hush before the birds had begun
to sing. The lake was breathing softly as in sleep; rising and falling,
it seemed to me to absorb like a great sponge all the sounds of the
earth. It was a time of quiet -- no wind rustling the leaves, no lapping
of the water, no calling of animal or birds."

“...... One winter night I stood and listened beneath the stars. It was
cold, perhaps twenty below, and I was on a lake deep in the wilds.
The stars were close that night, so close they almost blazed, and the
Milky Way was a brilliant luminous splash across the heavens. …..”

旅夜書懷 (杜甫)

細草微風岸,危檣獨夜舟。
星垂平野闊,月湧大江流。

John Muir (1838 - 1914)

"Only by going alone in silence, without baggage,
can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness.
All other travel is mere dust and hotels and baggage
and chatter."

  1. At times I used to go to my nearby elementary school and shoot basketball 5:30 in the morning. There would be absolutely nobody there, dawn was about to break. A couple of isolated bird chirps would break the still silence. I breathed in the crispy morning air and I couldn't feel more invigorated. I look forward to doing that again after my shoulders heal.....tl

  5. 李白is imaginative and there is just no comparision. His poems are not as difficult and deep as poets like 李商隱, or as involved in wide variety of matters like 李賀....tl
