李白’s 長干行, one of the most delicate Chinese classical poems,
had been translated into English by many poets.
“ River Merchant’s Wife” is one of the English Version translated
by Ezra Pound, an American poet:

River Merchant’s Wife

While my hair was still cut straight across my forehead
I played about the front gate, pulling flowers.
You came by on bamboo stilts, playing horse,
You walked about my seat, playing with blue plums.
And we went on living in the village of Chokan:
Two small people, without dislike or suspicion.

At fourteen I married My Lord you.
I never laughed, being bashful.
Lowering my head, I looked at the wall.
Called to, a thousand times, I never looked back.

At fifteen I stopped scowling,
I desired my dust to be mingled with yours
Forever and forever and forever.
Why should I climb the lookout?

At sixteen you departed,
You went into far Ku-to-en, by the river of swirling eddies,
And you have been gone five months.
The monkeys make sorrowful noise overhead.

You dragged your feet when you went out.
By the gate now, the moss is grown, the different mosses,
Too deep to clear them away!
The leaves fall early this autumn, in wind.
The paired butterflies are already yellow with August
Over the grass in the West garden;
They hurt me. I grow older.
If you are coming down through the narrows of the river Kiang,
Please let me know beforehand,
And I will come out to meet you
As far as Cho-fo-Sa.

There were other classical poems of “ Merchant’s Wife ” or
"商人婦":

( * 劉采春 was a woman poet of the Tang dynasty period)

They all described the repressed emotion and unspoken feelings
of the 商人婦, when they were thinking of their traveling merchant
husbands, the feelings of worries, loneliness, isolation, insecurity,
expectation, disappointment, frustration, and even regret or remorse.

  1. Comment from Wei, my NTUMC classmate:

"Our poetry club did our own versions of translation, which, I’m proud to say, are more faithful to the original."

"The translation was a collective work done by me and my high school classmate, Mimi. (By the way, she’s a chemist. So, both of us are amateurs.) I did the second last version, and she gave the finishing touch."

Here is their (Wei and Mimi) translated English version of “長干行“:

Picking flowers, I was playing by my door,
Barely covering my brows was my child-like hair.
Whirling a green plum branch, astride a bamboo stick,
You came, trotting around my garden chair.
We both lived in Chang-gan Lane,
Two little ones kept no secrets, free of care.

At fourteen I became your wife,
I lowered my gaze toward dark walls,
So bashful that I dared not look at you,
    And would not turn to your thousand calls;

At fifteen I began to cheerfully smile.
We vowed to be true till we turn to ashes and dust.
Like the “lover by the bridge’s pillar”, you would keep promise,
And I would not climb the Husband -Waiting Terrace, I trust.

Then at sixteen, I saw you off to a long journey
Through Qutang Gorge, whose rocks the waters crash unswerving.
In summertime, the rapids are perilous to ford,
and gibbons’ howl to heaven sound distressing.

The hesitating steps you left behind,
one by one, were covered by green moss.
The moss grew too deep to sweep,
And the autumn wind rushed down the leaves across.

The yellow butterflies in the autumn,
two by two, hover over our west-garden grass.
Seeing them and us, my heart is aching.
As I sit and pine, the rose on my cheeks withers, alas.

Oh, when you return from Sanba lands,
Make sure to send me a message ahead!
I will meet you far at the town of Hauling Sands,

And the long distance I will tread.
