In the journey of life, even though we may begin at different times and
places with different backgrounds, our paths cross with others so that
we may share compassion, observations, and hope.
Crossing someone’s path is often coincidental, unexpected, and is a
transient encounter that may even happen only once in a lifetime.
In his 【雅舍小品】, 梁實秋 wrote a chapter entitled "唐人自何處來".
He was one of the "清華學子"s who were so fortunate to have the
privilege to come to the United States as a "官派留學生".
On their way to Denver/Colorado Springs, Colorado by train, they
stopped at Cheyenne, Wyoming, where they happened to come across
a "老者", who was a former Chinese railroad worker (鐵路華工) and
owned a small Chinese restaurant in town then.
He wrote:
Two "唐人"s , a laborer of "coolie trade" and a beneficiary of "官派留學",
had their paths crossed in a foreign land. It is a touching story.
Crossing paths with someone, even a brief encounter as in this case, can
be a forever memory.
