This morning, on my scheduled work day as a retired annuitant, instead of taking the elevator, I used the corridor stairway as usual.
While I was going up and down the stairs, I heard my own footsteps. I must have taken this corridor stairs tens of thousands times for the past 36 years.
But, today, for some reason, I seemed to pay more attention to them.
Of course, they are familiar sounds because they are my own footsteps. Then I noticed that the character, or perhaps the “quality”, of my own footsteps had gradually changed over the years, more appreciable since I sustained a back injury more than a year ago.
They are now lighter, slower and variable, which means more careful, and I no longer hear the “echoes” of my own footsteps inside this quiet corridor stairway.
I surely miss those lively, speedy and loud footsteps of my own and their echoes I had experienced during my early years on the job here. I was in my 30s then.
( I write what I see and hear, what it means to me, what I
think, and what I want to say.)
