Albert Einstein, who fancied himself as a violinist, was rehearsing a Haydn string quartet. When he failed for the fourth time to get his entry in the second movement, the cellist looked up and said, "The problem with you, Albert, is that you simply can't count."
Dr. Michael M. Lai (賴明詔) is also a scientist and violinist, but he "can count", as you can see in the video.
Michael M. Lai is one of my NTUMC (台大醫學院) 1968 classmates. He is one of the very few classmates who went into the field of Basic Medical Science. He later became a world renowned scientist and virologist.
He has been known as the "冠狀病毒之父" in Taiwan. During the peak of "SARS", the spring of 2003, he 義不容辭, returned to Taipei to give a helping hand. In an article which I sent to 景福醫訊, a NTUMC Alumni Bulletin, I wrote,
" ...... 這位冠狀病毒之父, 在SARS疫情高峰時刻, 深夜返台, 電視上看到他背著簡單行李, 獨自一人, 走在那冷凊凊的機場入境走道, 風瀟瀟兮, 易水寒, ....... 為國效命, 正逢其時 ......... ."

Later that year, he returned to the homeland and assumed the position of Vice President of Academia Sinica. He stated the move “ furnished him new life stories and experience”. As his performance in scientific administration at Academia Sinica was apparent to the public, in 2006, he was selected and served as the president of NCKU (成功大學).
He was one of the three recipients of the prestigious " 2013 Presidential Science Prize of Taiwan". In the "Award Ceremony Program" booklet, he stated that the four-year presidency at NCKU was the "most delightful (美好) and memorable time" of his life.
He recalled on one winter evening, while he was walking alone on campus, a student rode a bike passing him. The student suddenly stopped her bike at a distance of him, and turned to say, "校長好". He felt that this little greeting move had suddenly "wiped the winter chill away".
Obviously, his "溫,良,恭" nature and his "親近", close relationship with students had something to do with this warm-hearted encounter.
