豆漿燒餅油條來三套 !

I don’t recall I ever had “豆漿燒餅油條” in my childhood. Even until the early 1970s when I left Taiwan, it was still a rare treat for me. After we moved to the US, there was practically no “豆漿店” around where we lived.

In the early morning after we arrived in Taipei for a visit three weeks ago, my NTUMC classmate WLC came to the lobby of 台大景福會館 to meet us. Just as he had done on our prior Taiwan visit, he again handed to us some tourist information and maps, as well as two “悠遊” cards so that we could be “悠哉遊哉” touring the "大台北地區" at ease.

He then walked with us to a “豆漿店” at the nearby local street and ordered a set of "豆漿燒餅油條" for each of us, thinking that we must had not had the opportunity to do so for a long time. It was his kind, thoughtful and considerate arrangement he made for his friends who had just arrived the night before and were yet to begin their homeland journey.

One day, another morning, when YCD, another classmate of my wife’s, invited us to a “one of the best" 豆漿店 in town. We met at 國父紀念館 first. After a brief sightseeing around the area, we came to "阜杭豆漿" at "華山市場". We were waiting in a long line with at least a hundred people ahead of us. We thought "既來之, 則安之", " 排隊就對了".

 It took almost one hour for our turn. Once we got there, on the second floor, I saw nothing fancy inside at all. All the employees were extremely busy making and preparing. Finally we got to the counter, "豆漿燒餅油條來三套! ", YCD said to the casher. The next task was trying to find an open table to sit.

Although I did not really tasted the difference in term of its "口感" or flavor, I however found the entire experience to be unique, memorable and "sweet".
