《活到老,真好》

《活到老,真好》

The other day, IMC, a classmate of mine in the NTUMC1968 class e-mailed me an article entitled "活到老,真好", written by 王鼎鈞, an essay writer in Taiwan.  王 was born in 1925. He must be in his early 70s when he wrote this essay in the year of 1999.  (I also have one of his books: "開放的人生", published in 1975, on my bookshelf.)

He said:"上帝把幼小的我們給了父母,把青壯的我們給了國家社會,到了老年,他才把(我)還給我自己,這一段生命特別珍貴。"

As we age, we become more emotionally stable and content. We are happier when we enter our golden year.

Laura Carstensen, a psychologist at Stanford, said:  “In early adulthood, there are a lot of what-ifs, ………. , you spend the next few decades striving to achieve those goals. But when you are older, the what-ifs have been resolved. So you are less stressed and can—finally—relax.”

Just as what 王鼎鈞 and Carstensen have said, I am happier than I have ever been in my life these days. I know who I am, I have time on my hands, and the best is yet to be .

  1. I guess "relax" may have to do with the previous comment.
