Keeping the Memories Alive

Every once in a while when I was feeling nostalgic, I would open up some binders that contains years of memories (old letters, cards and personal documents that I had received and kept).

Through the lost "art of letter writing", the old letters, especially those from a good old friend, have kept my memories alive.

I have a special binder keep all the old letters, a total of more than 150 I have received from one individual, my NTUMC1968 classmate WLC in Taiwan, since I left there for the United States some 40 years ago. There must be something to be said for keeping the letters.

往事只能回味. Rereading the old letters instantly brings me back in time and I notice how times have changed. It is quite fun to reflect back upon our lives through this particular lens.

WLC’s writing style has never changed and his letter writing was always neatly scripted using the “standard letter papers”, or “郵政標準信箋”.

For years, through his letters, I have learned about his family affair, the growing up of their children and the 甘苦 experiences of his professional life. Of course, he has also kept me informed of the status of my classmates in Taiwan all these years.

I consider this binder to be part of the archives of WLC's family life, and of my NTUMC1968 class history as well.
