My NTUMC1968 classmate LJN, or better known by the classmates
as “先 ㄟ”, came to the Bay Area again with his lovely spouse from
Taiwan to see their grandbaby.
LJN is a semi-retiree and seems to have more time now to enjoy the
life and practice the ancient poet 王維’s “Old Age Philosphy”,
" 晚年惟好靜,萬事不關心。行到水窮處,坐看雲起時。"
His daughter once said to him that he had two expensive hobbies,
which were playing golf and drinking good wine. As a matter of fact,
he and his wife played golf almost daily since they came to the Bay
Area just a few days ago. He was proud to show me a pair of golf caps
they received while playing on the prestigious Presidio golf course.
It was a cool, pleasant morning. We together did a gentle hiking, or
more correctly, a walk, along the Inspiration trails at Tilden Park on
the Berkeley Hills. As usual, we "笑談古今事". Among many things,
he also talked about the joy of wine.
He mentioned another classmate of ours, HJS, who had recently
visited him in Taiwan. They both love wine very much and are the
real wine-drinkers. One night, they had a wonderful time together
drinking good wine. “兩人對酌山花開,一杯一杯復一杯”, they all got
drunk at the end. He said to me that he did not even remember how
HJS, the other drunker, got back home that night. Obviously, like
李白, he was in a state of “我醉欲眠卿且去”.
