The Lin Family Mansion and Garden
It was during the Christmas time in 1995, when my family,
my wife, three children, and I, visited the Lin Family Garden
(林家花園 or 林本源園邸) in 板橋, my hometown.
Although 林家花園 was my favorite childhood place to hang out,
this time we needed to pay a fee to get in since it had then been
placed on the list of Taiwan’s historic preservation sites.
As a proud dad who had known the place quite well with all his
childhood memories, I told them, throughout the tour, where I
used to play and what I used to do with my childhood friends
back then. I also pointed to an old house, not too far from the
entry gate, where one of my elementary school classmates used to
live. He was one of the offspring of 林本源, the original landlord of
林家花園. He was a very smart kid and was our "班長", or called
"級長" back then. Our children were quite impressed and amazed.
Two generations together enjoyed the ancient luxury, the garden
and culture. The older generation (myself) had sweet memories
brought back, while serving as a special tour guide for the younger
generation (our children).
