A Sight to Behold

On this lovely autumn morning, we made a visit to The Petrified Forest,
where we saw the world’s largest petrified trees and appreciated the
awesomeness of nature.

We imagined that we stepped back in time over 3 million years and
walked the trail of the petrified redwood giants.

In 1871, Charles Evans found the first stump of petrified wood while
tending his cattle in this forest meadow. He then claimed this forest
property under the "Timber & Stone Act"; excavated various petrified
logs, including the Queen Tree. (8 feet in diameter, 65 feet in length.)
Some of this Redwoods were over 2,000 years old when they were
buried over 3 million years ago.

Writer Robert Louis Stevenson visited Charles Evans and his Petrified
Forest during his honeymoon in the wine country in 1880. Stevenson
recounted his visit in his booklet, "The Silverado Squatters".

................. "Who first found the forest?" asked my wife. (Stevenson's)
"The first? I was that man," said he (C. Evans). "I was cleaning up the
pasture for my beasts, when I found THIS"-kicking a great redwood
seven feet in diameter, that lay there on its side, hollow heart, clinging
lumps of bark, all changed into gray stone, with veins of quartz between
what had been the layers of the wood. ................. .

One and a quarter century later, after having visited this unique place,
where is actually less than an hour's drive away from his home, Yeh Tze
found that it was a sight to behold, and therefore he posted his trip
experience, his thought and the photos he had taken on his own blog:
"The Yeh Tze File".
