好鄰居

一個禮拜前, 在每日循例, 社區附近散步的時候, 我們做了一件事, 每個好鄰居都會做的事。

我倆, 每回繞著社區漫步遛達的時候,  總會對著人家的前院草坪, 花卉, 甚至房子的格調, 大門的顏色, 有所講評, 或是意見。
 
這天, 當我們經過 J and P 家的時候, 發現他們大門鎖上還掛著整把鎖匙。顯然的, 他們應是在匆忙之中,  鎖門後, 妄了取出鎖匙。

我們按鈴幾次, 沒人回應, 想他們一定外出未回, 但又不知他們何時回來。

於是, 我們留下一紙條, 告訴他們, 我們暫時保管他們的鎖匙, 請他們放心。

三天後, 他們回到家,  P 趕來我家,  一再致謝, 取回鎖匙。

隔天, 我們的信箱, 多了一份卡片, 那是 J 寫的 Thank You card:

Dear Dr. & Mrs Yeh:

On our return from a family visit in L.A., we learned that you were the one to discover our keys in the front door.  Needless to say, we were distressed to find them missing and very relieved to learn they were in safe-keeping on our return. Thank you so much for your alertness and being on the neighborly look-out.  We are so blessed to have such great and caring neighbors!  Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving with all the family.

As a matter of fact, our daughters used to babysit J and P's children 20-25 years ago.
