“楓城” has been the nickname for NTUMC (臺大醫學院) campus,
but we did not seem to have the name “楓城” while we were there
some 40 years ago. Yesterday, I made a telephone consultation
with my classmate professor 陳定信 in Taipei, as he was the former
Dean of NTUMC and must be very familiar with the NTUMC 大小事s.
He indicated to me that “楓城” became the nickname for NTUMC
campus years after we graduated from there in 1968. The maple trees
(楓香樹 , Liquidambar formosana) on the NTUMC campus were
originally planted by Ex-Dean 杜聰明. Many of them, however, were
moved to 台北木柵動物園 about 20 years ago, when NTUMC campus
had a major new construction project underway.

Many years ago, during one of my family trip back to Taipei, I revisit
the NTUMC campus. I saw an entirely different scene, which led me
to write a 打油詩 “憶楓城” expressing my “melancholic” feeling then.

It was printed in the August 1994 issue of "景福醫訊" , a monthly
NTUMC Alumni Bulletin:

憶楓城

楓林景緻眼前休，此地曾是楓葉城；
如今鋼筋做硬體，增填老漢一生愁。

昔曰秋風落葉天，杏林學子當階坐；
秋風帶走讀書聲，多情落葉競相投。
